Artist: Bill Fontana

Dark Arches, Leeds

June 2005

A live sound sculture in the labyrinthine Dark Arches of Leeds by renowned US artist Bill Fontana.

Sound Lines used a specially designed loudspeaker system to emit the live sounds of the River Aire below and the Leeds City train station above transforming the space into an immense, brick-built acoustic instrument.

Hydrophones were sunk into the course of the River Aire and the musical water sounds played back through loudspeakers along Dark Neville Street. A series of microphones installed in the vast architecture of Leeds City train station relayed an acoustic description of trains arriving and departing, and the sound of station announcements, into the river arches below.

Funded by Arts Council England, Arts and Business, Leeds City Council and Section 106.
